Slicks & Sticks

One of the most important things a person can do when aiming to achieve their goal is to simply write it down.

For the past few years I’ve always had some super-goal to reach: AQHA World Champion Horse Judging Champion Team, Miss Rodeo Colorado, graduating Summa Cum Laude, and landing a stellar and fulfilling job. Every goal consumed my everything, namely time and energy. And then everything really went on the back burner when I jumped into my last goal, to land a stellar and fulfilling job. So, now?

Team roping has been a HUGE part of my life since my dad picked up a rope in 2003 after a 30 year break. It’s been a big part of spending time with my family and meeting family I’m not even related to by blood. It’s opened up a whole other world, and I truly credit it to many adventures I’ve had, great friends that I’ve met, and all that I’ve learned a lot along the way. Never have I had the time and energy to dedicate to getting into the arena with a rope in my hand myself. (But, may I say, I’m darn good chute help!).

Since transitioning into a new professional role, I’ve really found myself with a lot more energy from doing what I love. Given that my role requires knowing all I can about what’s going on in the world of team roping, I decided to put my self-consciousness aside and pick up a rope. I’ve been roping our BONES heading dummy nearly every day since I took my new position and have improved by leaps and bounds. So, where to next?

Last weekend Dad and I spent the day together at the Spencer Miller Tribute roping. Spencer was a great friend who lit the world up with his energy, positivity, and smile. He was always influencing people in great ways, and his Tribute roping was no exception. When we were driving home, Dad encouraged me to think about setting a goal to rope at the 2012 Spencer Miller Tribute. Not only would that be about the ideal time to prepare, but it would have a tremendous significance as Spencer played such a great role in our lives and we were all brought together by team roping.

So, Spencer – Be watching out for the second weekend in September next year. Cause I’m going to have just as big of a smile as you always did!
